Just had a question. Friend of mine recently bought the M50 w/speed booster and Canon 17-40 f/4L. For some reason we couldn't get the lens to mount to the speed booster. Aligned the red mounting dots and from there, we couldn't get the lens to rotate at all. Just wanted to confirm if it was compatible.
Used to own this lens many years ago, only used on Canon 5D series cameras. As other said it's soft at edges at 17mm/F4, much better at 40mm side. The new EF 16-35L/4.0 IS is much better. I sold FE 16-35 ZA, bought EF 16-35L/4.0 IS in Canon refurbished with additional 15% off deal together with EF 100-400L IS II as then thought own two systems.
MTF (resolution) The EF 17-40mm f/4 L showed an excellent performance in the lab. It's quite safe to assume that the peak performance in the center exceeded the resolution limits of the 8 megapixel sensor of the EOS 350D. The borders are very good though stopping down a little helps to lift up the resolution almost to center quality.

Considering this becomes a standard ish zoom on a crop camera, and it being F4, I wouldnt recommend buying it. I'd either aim for the 11-20 EF-M, which is native and much wider. Or if you are looking for a more standard zoom the Canon EF-s 17-55 F2.8, which will be a wider focal range and faster aperture, and probably better performance too at
At f/4 the 17-40mm is sharper, has less flare and higher contrast. The new 17-40mm f/4L is a welcome surprise though. At nearly half the price of the faster and slightly wider 16-35mm f/2.8L it provides excellent image quality, surpassing that of the more expensive lens in several areas. READ FULL REVIEW. 6 µm. Introduction Introduced in 2003 the EF 17-40 f/4L USM was one of the first of the lightweight pro-level L-series zooms from the firm adopting a constant f4 aperture. Not only does that make the lens relatively small and more portable compared with the f2.8 varients, but it also helps keep it moderately priced.
Full rules of LOTW HERE. This is the cheapest red ring you can buy. It has a good reputation for a generalist lens. It's wide without breaking your budget, it has since been passed in sharpness by it's newer sexier younger cousins the 16-35s (which we will feature another week), but with so many copies in circulation (including my own copy purchased recently for $250 with a chipped filter
